DO's and DON'Ts During Active Water Damage

Busted Pipe This is a busted pipe during an active water leak.

When experiencing an active water damage, there is many things running through your mind. SERVPRO of Orangeburg is aware of this and we are here to help. Below is a checklist of DO's and DON'Ts to assist you in what to do next, to lessen damage caused to your home or business.

DO:

  • Shut off the water source if possible.
  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting the affected area.
  • Place aluminum foil or wooden blocks under furniture legs.
  • Hang furs and leather goods separately at room temperature. 
  • Remove oriental or other colored rugs from wet carpeting.

DO NOT:

  • Use a regular vacuum to remove water.
  • Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of areas where ceilings are sagging from retained water.
  • Leave books, magazines, or other colored items on wet carpeting.
